There’s a reason church steeples are the tallest things in most New England towns. They were built to be seen — landmarks of the community, symbols of permanence. But permanence takes maintenance. And after decades of exposure to wind, rain, ice, and summer heat, even the most solidly built steeple will start showing its age.

Church steeple restoration is specialized work — it’s not a job for a general painter or a roofing crew that’s never been 60 feet off the ground. Here’s an honest look at what the process actually involves, and what churches and parishes should know before they start.
Why Steeples Deteriorate
Wood is the primary building material in the vast majority of New England church steeples — and wood, exposed to the elements at elevation, takes a beating.
The most common issues we find on steeple inspections:
- Rot in the structural framing — especially where horizontal and vertical members meet, where water can pool and penetrate over time
- Failed flashing — the metal (typically lead or aluminum) that seals the steeple base to the roof below. When flashing fails, water runs down into the structure unseen for years
- Paint failure and bare wood — once the paint film breaks down, UV and moisture work into the wood fast. What looks like a paint problem is often a rot problem by the time it’s visible
- Louver and vent deterioration — the louvered openings that allow sound to carry (and air to circulate) are often the first components to rot, since they’re thin-profiled and fully exposed
- Lightning rod and conductor issues — older grounding systems may be corroded, disconnected, or undersized by modern standards
- Lead paint — virtually every steeple built before 1978 has lead paint. This requires proper containment, testing, and disposal protocols — not just a power wash and a repaint
The Restoration Process
No two steeples are identical, but the process follows a consistent sequence.
1. Inspection and Assessment
Before any work starts, someone needs to get eyes on every surface — which means getting up there. We use scaffolding, man-lifts, or rigging depending on site access, steeple height, and geometry. A thorough inspection documents:
- All areas of visible rot (probing with an awl to check depth and spread)
- Flashing condition at every transition point
- Paint condition: adhesion, film integrity, lead content if not already known
- Structural member condition: sill plates, corner posts, girts, steeple framing
- Hardware: anchor bolts, tie rods, any iron or steel components that may have rusted and expanded (which can split wood members from the inside)
The inspection report drives the scope of work and the budget. Skipping it — or doing it from the ground with binoculars — leads to surprises mid-project.
2. Structural Repair
Rot repair is the heart of most steeple restorations. Depending on severity, this means:
- Dutchman repairs — cutting out the rotted section and splicing in new wood, properly sized and glued/fastened to restore the original profile. This is the preferred method for decorative trim and moldings where the original profile needs to be maintained.
- Sister framing — adding new structural members alongside compromised originals to restore load capacity
- Full member replacement — when rot has progressed too far, the affected piece comes out and is replaced in kind. Matching historic profiles often requires custom milling.
- Epoxy consolidant and filler — for surface rot that hasn’t compromised structural integrity, two-part epoxy systems can stabilize and fill damaged wood. These are paintable, bond well, and resist future moisture intrusion.
The goal is always to preserve as much original material as possible, while making sure what remains is structurally sound.
3. Flashing and Waterproofing
The single most important thing a steeple restoration can do is get the water out — and keep it out. This means:
- Removing and replacing failed flashing at the steeple base, at any mid-point transitions, and around any penetrations (weathervane rods, lightning conductors)
- Ensuring proper overlap and slope so water sheds away from the structure
- Using appropriate materials — lead-coated copper is the historic standard and the most durable option for steeple flashings; aluminum is acceptable for most applications
Flashing failures that go unaddressed will rot out the new structural work within a decade.
4. Lead Paint Handling
If the steeple was built before 1978, assume there’s lead paint. Connecticut requires that lead paint disturbed during renovation be handled according to EPA RRP (Renovation, Repair and Painting) rules. For a large church steeple project, this typically means:
- Pre-project testing to confirm presence and concentration
- Full containment at the base of the steeple to catch debris and chips
- Proper disposal of lead-containing waste
- Documentation of procedures
A contractor who doesn’t bring up lead paint on a pre-1978 steeple is a contractor you should ask harder questions of.
5. Priming and Painting
With repairs complete and all surfaces stable, the steeple gets primed and painted. High-performance exterior systems — oil-based or high-build alkyd primers, followed by premium acrylic topcoats — are the standard for steeple work. Budget paints don’t belong 60 feet in the air where repainting means re-rigging.
Color matching to historic colors is possible with spectrophotometry if original paint records don’t exist. Many New England churches have documented historic color schemes through state preservation offices.
6. Final Details
Before the scaffolding comes down:
- Lightning rod and grounding conductor inspection and repair or replacement as needed
- Weathervane or cross reseating and securing
- Louver repair or replacement and priming/painting
- Clock face restoration if applicable
- Final documentation — photographs of every elevation before and after
How Long Does It Take?
A typical steeple restoration — inspection, structural repair, flashing, and repaint — runs 4 to 10 weeks on-site depending on scope and height. Permitting and scaffolding lead time add to the overall project timeline.
Budget range for a New England wood steeple restoration: $40,000 to $150,000+, depending on steeple height, severity of rot, access complexity, and lead paint requirements. Every project is different, and we don’t believe in ballpark numbers before we’ve seen the structure.
Who Should Do This Work?
Look for a contractor who:
- Has experience with historic wood structures, not just residential framing
- Understands lead paint compliance and can document it
- Has the equipment and experience to work safely at elevation (scaffolding, man-lifts, or rigging — not just ladders)
- Can produce custom millwork to match historic profiles
- Carries appropriate insurance for this type of work
